Yoga for Diabetes
What a surprise to find out our lowered energy. sore joints, balance is off”, lower stress threshold, food cravings are a result of over or under functioning of our insulin level. Two things cause me to take a look at teaching Yoga as a tool for regulating blood sugar. The first, is that the Center for Disease Control most recent study shows an epidemic spread of Type I Diabetes among our youth population because of fast food as a source of daily nutrients. The second, is my contact with Diabetes patients in my day job as a Mental Health therapist in a long term care facility. They suffer from the outcome of unregulated dietary, exercise and stress reduction skills manifesting in blindness, loss of circulation and necessary amputation of limbs. Sounds grim but the future of treating diabetes is bright!

Yoga Journal sights that “several Indian and European studies have indicated yoga may help insulin-regulating medication by lowering blood sugar levels”. People under stress have elevated bood sugar levels so it is difficult to determine whether asanas and medication work because they relax patients or because specific poses stimulate the pancreas, causing it to release more insulin. These results are encouraging and offer patients the experience of feeling more energetic, more relaxed and confident as they bring a “new normal” of health back into their lives. Improved muscle tone and breathing habits have also been named as benefits from using Yoga for diabetic symptoms.

Email me at JoyceReena@yogaismeditation.net to find out my plans to set a class to work on this exciting health practice!

Add your name to my “Interest List” to plan a class to use gentle stretches, breathing habits to cope with stress and walking better from feeling better!
